How to avoid blind spot accidents with trucks

On Behalf of | Oct 1, 2021 | Truck Accidents

The roads in Pennsylvania can be hazardous at the best of times. However, potential dangers are heightened by the presence of large trucks and commercial vehicles.  Due to their size, a collision that involves a truck can have life-altering consequences for the victims. Frequently, trucking accidents occur because of blinds spots.

Blind spots are essentially the area around a vehicle that the driver cannot see. These areas are typically accentuated in trucks because operators do not have the same access to rear-view mirrors or windows that drivers have in passenger vehicles. As a result, it is worth knowing some of the more common methods of preventing blind spot accidents:

Know which areas to watch

Certain areas around a truck have a more restricted view. These tend to be directly in front of and behind the truck, as well as the area next to the vehicle’s right-hand door.

Be patient

When you have a tight deadline, it may be tempting to cut in and out of lanes to save time. However, it is important to keep in mind that large trucks are not as maneuverable as small vehicles. It is much safer to remain patient, and only pass when there is sufficient time and space to do so.

Pay special attention to mirrors

As a general rule, if you cannot see a truck driver in the mirrors of their vehicle, then they cannot see you. Always think about whether you are in a blind spot or not, and assume that the driver has not seen you regardless.

Be careful when overtaking

It is always best to avoid passing a truck on the right-hand side if possible. When you are left with no option but to pass, be sure to use your signals effectively and be aware of the space between vehicles. Understanding vehicular blinds could be in your best interests. If you have been involved in a road traffic accident with a truck that wasn’t your fault, it is important to know that you have legal rights to compensation for your injuries and losses.
